About Umi: Our AI Language Tutor

Univext offers AI-powered language tutoring through Umi, our conversational AI tutor. It is important for you to understand the following:

Umi is an AI, Not a Human

Umi is an artificial intelligence-powered language tutor designed to simulate natural conversation for language learning purposes. Umi is not a human being. While Umi is designed to be warm, encouraging, and adaptive to your learning needs, all interactions with Umi are powered by AI technology.

How Umi Works

Umi uses AI to:

  • Understand your spoken audio input
  • Generate spoken audio responses in real-time
  • Provide text transcriptions displayed on-screen for reading practice

Limitations of AI Tutoring

Umi is designed for language learning and conversational practice only. Umi is not:

  • A certified language instructor or accredited educational institution
  • A professional translation or interpretation service
  • A substitute for formal language education or certification programs
  • Qualified to provide legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice

While Umi strives for accuracy, AI-generated content may occasionally contain errors. Users should verify critical information through authoritative sources.

Personal Information We Collect

Information needed to use the Univext Platform

We collect personal information about you when you use the Univext Platform. Without it, we may not be able to provide all services requested. This information includes:

  • Contact Information, Account, Profile Information. Such as your first name, last name, email address, profile photo, some of which will depend on the features you use.
  • Identity Verification and Payment Information. Such as images of your government issued ID (as permitted by applicable laws), your ID number or other verification information, bank account or payment account information. If you are not a Member, we may receive payment information relating to you, such as when an Univext user provides your payment card to complete a booking. If a copy of your ID is provided to us, we may scan, use, and store information contained in your ID to verify your identity.

Information you choose to give us

You can choose to provide us with additional personal information. This information may include:

  • Additional Profile Information. Such as bios, skills, job experience. Some of this information as indicated in your account settings is part of your public profile page and will be publicly visible.

  • Information About Others. Such as a payment instrument belonging to another person. By providing us with personal information about others, you certify that you have permission to provide that information to Univext for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, have shared the Univext Privacy Policy with them, and they have read and understood that it applies to them.

  • Other Information. Such as when you fill in a form, add information to your account, respond to surveys, post to community forums, participate in promotions, communicate with our customer care team and other Members, or share your experience with us. This may include health information if you choose to share it with us.

Lesson with Umi Data and Conversation Information

When you use Umi for language lessons, we collect and process the following data:

  • Your Spoken Audio Input. Your voice recordings are processed by our AI systems and stored for service improvement and quality assurance purposes.
  • Umi's Audio Responses. The audio responses generated by Umi during your lessons.
  • Conversation Transcripts. Text transcriptions of conversations displayed on-screen during lessons.
  • Lesson with Umi Metadata. Information about your lessons including timestamps, duration, language being practiced, and session identifiers.
  • Conversation Context. The content and context of your conversations with Umi to enable natural, contextual responses.

Umi's Memory and Personalization Data

To provide a personalized and continuous learning experience, Umi remembers information across your lessons. This memory system stores:

  • Learning Progress. Observations about your language proficiency level and improvements over time.
  • Topics Discussed. Subjects, themes, and topics you have talked about in previous lessons.
  • Corrections and Mistakes. Common errors you make and areas where you need additional practice.
  • User Preferences and Interests. Personal interests, preferences, and contextual information you share during conversations that help Umi personalize future lessons.
  • Lesson with Umi Continuity Data. Information that enables Umi to reference past conversations.

Information Automatically Collected by Using the Univext Platform and our Payment Services

When you use the Univext Platform and Payment Services, we automatically collect personal information. This information may include:

  • Geo-location Information. Such as precise or approximate location determined from your IP address or mobile device's GPS depending on your device settings.

  • Usage Information. Such as the pages or content you view, searches for Members, Bookings you have made, and other actions on the Univext Platform.

  • Log Data and Device Information. Such as details about how you've used the Univext Platform, IP address, access dates and times, hardware and software information, device information, unique identifiers, crash data, and cookie data.

  • Cookies and Similar Technologies as described in our Cookie Policy.

  • Payment Transaction Information. Such as payment instrument used, date and time, payment amount, payment instrument expiration date and billing postcode, PayPal email address, IBAN information, your address, and other related transaction details.

Personal Information We Collect from Third Parties

We collect personal information from other sources, such as:

  • Third-Party Services. If you link, connect, or login to the Univext Platform with a third party service (e.g. Google, Facebook), you direct the service to send us information such as your registration, friends list, and profile information as controlled by that service or as authorized by you via your privacy settings at that service.

  • Background Information. For Members, and to the extent permitted by applicable laws, we may obtain reports from third-party service providers.

  • Other Sources. To the extent permitted by applicable law, we may receive additional information about you from third party service providers and/or partners.

To Develop the Univext Platform

  • enable you to access the Univext Platform and make and receive payments,
  • enable you to communicate with other Members,
  • process your request,
  • perform analytics, debug and conduct research,
  • provide customer service,
  • send you messages, updates, security alerts, and account notifications,
  • personalize and customize your experience based on your interactions with the Univext Platform.

To Create and Maintain a Trusted and Safer Environment

In order to:

  • detect and prevent fraud, spam, abuse, security and safety incidents, and other harmful activity,
  • conduct security investigations and risk assessments,
  • verify or authenticate information provided by you,
  • comply with our legal obligations,
  • resolve disputes with our Members,
  • enforce our Terms and other policies.

In limited cases, automated processes could restrict or suspend access to the Univext Platform if such processes detect activity that may pose a safety or other risk. If you would like to challenge decisions based on automated processes, please contact us.

To Provide, Personalize, Measure, and Improve our Advertising and Marketing

For example to:

  • send you promotional messages, marketing, advertising, and other information based on your preferences,
  • personalize, measure, and improve our advertising,

To Provide Payment services

Personal information is used to enable Payment Services such as to:

  • detect and prevent money laundering, fraud, abuse, and security incidents,

You can make certain information publicly visible to others, such as your profile photo, first name, last name, bio, skills and job experience.

We may disclose your information to courts, law enforcement, governmental or public authorities, tax authorities, or authorized third parties, if and to the extent we are required or permitted to do so by law.

Service Providers

We share personal information with third-party service providers who help us operate our platform, process payments, and deliver our services. These providers are contractually bound to protect your personal information.

Univext LLC is based in the United States. When you use our services, your personal data may be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. For transfers from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, we implement appropriate safeguards as required by law.

We retain your personal data for the duration of your account and as necessary for our legitimate business purposes, legal obligations, and to provide our services.

Automated Decision-Making

Umi may make automated observations about your language proficiency level to personalize lesson difficulty and content. These assessments are used solely for educational personalization and do not have legal or similarly significant effects on you.

Analyzing your Communications

We may review, scan, or analyze your communications on the Univext Platform for fraud prevention, risk assessment, regulatory compliance, investigation, product development, research, analytics, enforcing our Terms of Service, and customer support purposes.

Linking Third-Party Accounts

You can link your Univext account with certain third-party services like social networks. When you direct the data sharing by creating this link, some of the information provided to us from linking accounts may be published on your public profile.

Third-Party Partners & Integrations

Parts of Univext may link to third-party services, not owned or controlled by Univext. Use of these services is subject to the privacy policies of those providers. Univext does not own or control these third parties and when you interact with them you are providing your information to them.

You can exercise any of the rights described in this section consistent with applicable law.

  • Access: You can request a copy of your personal data, including your Umi lesson history and memory data.
  • Correction: You can request correction of inaccurate personal data.

  • Account Settings: You can access and update many data points through your Account settings.

Under GDPR and similar laws, you also have the right to:

Univext is not directed to children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

We reserve the right to modify this Privacy Policy at any time in accordance with applicable law. If we do so, we will post the revised Privacy Policy and update the "Last Updated" date at the top.
